Window Coverings Inside Vs Outside Mount
Window blinds come in so many styles and colors and among the options are where to install your blinds. Whether to install in the inside of the window frame or outside of the frame. There are many pros and cons to each option depending on your windowsill depth, type of blind and many more. Here are a few to consider.
Window Trim Style
There are two common ways to frame a window. The first is with trim and then without a frame. A common in traditional Massachusetts homes is wood trim around the windows. While apartment buildings or industrial spaces, may have simple drywall around the windows and no wood trim. If you have pretty wood trim, you may want to mount blinds inside to keep the trim visible. If your window has no trim, an outside mount can provide more coverage and dress up the simple look of the window.
Depth of Window Frame
The depth of the window frame is another thing to consider. Normally the depth is a few inches, which depending on the quality of the trip gives you the option of an inside or outside mount. However, with deep windowsills an inside mount can help expand the room and make it look larger.
Curtain Plans
If your look includes a layer of window treatments with the blinds, then you would want to mount the blinds inside. Curtains with blinds can offer more room darkening and sound absorption. The type of blind and shade as well as inside or outside mount will help determine how far out you need to mount your window treatments.
Blind Style
The style of the blind could also help determine the mount. A roman shade in a pretty fabric might be best outside mounted to show off, while a room darkening honeycomb shade used for functionality might be better inside mounted. Woodblinds come in different slat sizes and depending on the depth of your sil might determine the size slat you choose. If you don’t have much mounting depth, then a small slat that doesn’t protrude into the room would be a better option.
