Cleaning Your Window Treatments
It’s important to clean your shades and blinds regularly to keep them looking beautiful and new. Wood or aluminum blinds might seem easier to clean, but fabric shades are a nice alternative. The use of fabric instantly adds warmth and texture. Here are a few cleaning tips for fabric shades.
Cleaning Exterior Surfaces
Dust or vacuum the outside of your fabric shades, careful not to dent or stretch if they are pleated or honeycomb. If using a feather duster, then gently sweep along each surface. If you decide to use the vacuum, use the small brush attachment designed for upholstery.
Clearing Dust from HONEYCOMB Cells
Honeycomb shades are very popular due to the versatility and insulation ability. The honeycomb design creates an air pocket with insulating value, but those pockets can also trap dirt and dust. A blow dryer is a great way to clean inside each cell. Gently blow out any dust by using cold air on the lowest setting. Be sure to keep the blow dryer at a distance to prevent any damage to the honeycomb structure.
Removing Stains
Stains can be a bit tricky, so spot test in a discreet location to ensure there’s no discoloration. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners and opt for gentle upholstery cleaners or even just soap and water. Spray cleaning solution only on the stain and gently rub the spot with a gentle cloth or even your fingers. Be sure not to keep rubbing or materials may pill.
Wood Blinds or Aluminum Blinds
Using a feather duster monthly to dust each slat will keep them looking new. Real wood blinds should not use any water, but faux wood or aluminum would be alright to use light water and soap to clean.
